Sheriff’s officials in Santa Clara County are warning residents about a phone scam involving fake sheriff’s deputies.

Scam suspects are calling victims and informing them that they have a warrant from the sheriff’s office. The victims are then told to load money to a prepaid card to avoid arrest, sheriff’s officials said.

Victims are informed by the suspects that only federally insured MoneyPak cards are accepted in lieu of bail, and that checks, money orders and cash are no longer accepted, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspects, who go by the names Sergeant Whitman or Sergeant Glenn, call from a phone number that tricks victims into believing they are being contacted by the sheriff’s office.

One number that the suspects use is (408) 228-3553. When dialed, the number leads to a recording that states callers have reached the Civil Processing Division of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials are urging residents to be vigilant if they receive a call from a suspected scammer.

  1. Honestly, I think this headline would make a greater impact on public safety:

County Sheriff warns of drivers speeding through residential areas, tail-gating, using cell phones, trying to get in front of everyone else, cutting each other off and/or blocking and generally acting aggressively behind the wheel.

  2. The two comments thus far are sarcastic and insulting. Maybe you guys dodged the phone call or never received it, as did I. (I don’t pick up a ringing phone unless the name on caller ID is known to me.) Others may not be as smart or perceptive as you, and hopefully this article will help someone, even if it’s one person helping another avoid a scam. So I say thanks for writing it and reminding us to slow down and be careful. Maybe this article is suggesting that if you receive a call like this, find the phone number to the sheriff’s department online (don’t trust the one you’ve been given) and phone to verify what is being demanded of you.

  3. @harvardmom, Yes, I received this and many other scam calls..all the time!
When it does find you, I hope humor finds you well.

  4. I’ve received this call. Hung up.

I get at least three calls a days from solar panel companies. Good lord they’re obnoxious.

The one uses a toll-free number for caller ID. When you call it back it goes to PG&E.

You tell them to stop calling.. no effect. The next caller says he has no idea who called me the first time and will take me off the list.

.. only to have someone else call me the next day ..

I guess they do these calls because they work. So sad.
