Lasting Memories

Mary May Lemmon
June 22, 1940-April 12, 2022
Palo Alto, California

It is with heartfelt sadness that we wish to announce that Mary May Lemmon, 81, of Palo Alto, California passed away at Stanford Hospital on April 12th, 2022. Mary was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents taught her that giving back to the community is a way of life and gives purpose to one's own life. She started volunteering at the age of 16 with young cancer patients at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Her many other volunteering included ESL education, working with the homeless for 15 years and being apart of Kara- a grief support organization where she gave counseling to individuals who had lost loved ones. Kara honored her in 2018 for 30 years of service.

Mary attended Brandeis University, but left after one year to move to California and get married. She later finished her Bachelor’s degree at Notre Dame University in Belmont, California in 1978 and continued her education at San Jose State University to receive her Master’s degree in the early 80s.

Mary had a strong passion for traveling the world. She had been to over 100 countries and was given the opportunity to connect with so many people and learn about and embrace different cultures on a deeper level. Her love of animals led her to embark on five safaris during her lifetime. She considered those to be her favorite trips. She also loved going to the the Opera and Theater.

Mary was a compassionate, funny, selfless and very philanthropic woman. Her memory lives on through family and friends, all who profoundly cherish every moment spent with her. She is survived by her sister, Leslie Waldheim, of St. Louis Missouri, her daughters Patricia Holmes of La Jolla, California and Lisa Palma and her husband Chris Palma of Lafayette, California. She leaves behind five granddaughters, Stephanie, Mackenzie, Katie, Ellie and Brooke who will always remember and love their “Mamoo”. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Laura Marie Lemmon.
