Shirley D. Bettencourt, originally from Palo Alto California, passed away at the age of 91 on January 7, 2021.

Shirley was born in 1929 in Menlo Park, CA and lived nearly all of her life in Palo Alto, CA.

She is survived by her brother Les Cowger, daughter Debra Williams, grandson Christopher Cincotta and great grandsons Theo and Gavin Cincotta.

She is predeceased by her husband Albert Bettencourt, daughters Pamela and Elizabeth Bettencourt and brother Virgil Cowger.

Shirley’s home was truly Palo Alto and she loved it dearly. She grew up primarily in downtown Palo Alto and attended Lytton Elementary, Jordan Middle and Paly High. Shirley’s Grandmother lived on Waverley Street in downtown and she spent a lot of time with her family in this home. It brought her great joy, when in 1958, her and Al moved to “the other end of Waverley Street” in South Palo Alto where she lived 61 years until August 2019 when she moved near Debby to an assisted living community in Cedar Park, Texas.

Shirley met Al Bettencourt when she was 16 at Palo Alto High School. They were married in 1946 until she was windowed on February 20, 2016. They were married just short of 70 years. They spent their entire married life living in Palo Alto. Shirley worked at Bishops Creamery on California Ave, where they lived at 430 Sherman, and raised their daughter Pamela. After moving to the house on Waverley Street, Shirley quit work to raise her daughters Debby & Elizabeth. She provided the highest level of care to Elizabeth, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and confined to a wheelchair, until her passing at age 23.

It is without question that Shirley’s legacy will be her ability to be bake, cook and create beautiful things and to her never-ending devotion to provide a loving and caring home for her husband, daughters and family. Alta Mesa Funeral Home and Cemetery in Palo Alto is the final resting place for Shirley and Al along with their Daughters, Pam and Elizabeth and many family members and friends.
