With more cars clogging already jammed roadways and more companies testing self-driving technology, it's essential that Caltrans swiftly adopt the changes necessary to identify and fix safety deficiencies in a timely manner.

It's past time for a federal ban on assault weapons

We urge those on Capitol Hill to pass a federal ban on assault weapons and existing legislation to close background check loopholes.

Let's all be lights for liberty

We need to continue to speak out against mistreatment of immigrants
No matter your views on immigration, we should all be horrified by the mistreatment of immigrants perpetrated by ICE and the Border Patrol, and at the unabashedly racist rhetoric from our commander-in-chief.

Time for City Council to show it's serious about housing

It's abundantly clear there's a housing crisis in Mountain View and the Bay Area at large. What isn't clear is what the Mountain View City Council plans to do about it.

Bullis should hit pause on Mountain View plan

While Bullis Charter School has the ability to charge ahead and expand into Mountain View under state law that favors charter schools, we believe BMV staffers should hold off on their petition and take more time to work with Mountain View Whisman officials and families.

A roundup of endorsements from the Voice's editorial board for the Nov. 6 election
In the weeks leading up to Election Day this Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Voice has published endorsements on several local races and measures. Here is a list of our recommendations:

November 2, 2018 | 16 comments
Showalter, Siegel and Ramirez for City Council

Mountain View voters have some interesting choices to make on November's ballot. Competing for three seats on the City Council are two incumbents and four challengers.

Wheeler and Conley for Mountain View Whisman school board

It's a transformative time for the Mountain View Whisman School District, and voters may be asking themselves whether it's best to stay the course with the two incumbents, or react to recent missteps by supporting two challengers with fresh perspectives.

Re-elect Sheriff Laurie Smith

Incumbent seeks sixth term on Nov. 6
In spite of her shortcomings, which include an uninspired and weak administrative record over her two decades in the office, we believe Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith is the better choice.

Vonnegut, Torok and Walter for MVLA school board

For anyone who remembers Steven Nelson's term on Mountain View Whisman's school board, the Voice's recommendation for the three seats on the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District board will not come as a surprise.

A dishonest debate over rent control

There's nothing wrong with a fair debate over rent control. Rent control has always been a controversial issue, and there are compelling arguments on both sides. There is something wrong, however, with trying to roll back rent control by lying to voters.

Your friend, not enemy

Unprecedented attacks on the media hit the very protectors of our democracy
In an effort to focus public attention on the dangers of the President Donald Trump's attacks, we join in an unprecedented coordinated expression of concern by newspapers across the country.

Racial profiling in our own backyard

From "BBQ Becky" at Lake Merritt to a Starbucks employee in Philadelphia, accounts of police being called on black people trying to go about their daily lives have been well-documented.

Hirokawa for sheriff

After 20 years as sheriff, a strong challenge to Laurie Smith is overdue
Between Laurie Smith, 66, who is asking for a sixth, four-year term, and John Hirokawa -- who like Smith went up through the ranks over his more than 35 years with the department until retiring in 2016 at age 61 -- we think Hirokawa is the better choice.

Hendrickson for judge

Cindy Hendrickson's extensive experience in the criminal court system and her management experience make her the easy choice in this election.

Yes on Measure E

Counselors working out of closets. Cramped and outdated classrooms, libraries and cafeterias. Portables, some damaged and past their lifespans, crowding out parking spaces. That's what students and staff at Mountain View and Los Altos high schools have encountered in recent years as increased housing development has led to a rise in enrollment -- a trend that's only expected to continue.

No on Regional Measure 3

Ballot measure to increase bridge tolls by $3 over next six years is too much
RM3's toll increases, along with the implementation of inflation escalators, ask for too much and attempt to leverage the public's frustration over bad traffic to disproportionately penalize bridge commuters.

Recall Judge Persky

Accountability to the public does not threaten judicial independence
Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Persky abused his discretion, disrespected a jury, failed a crime victim and broke trust with the public he serves.
