Palo Alto-based TheatreWorks has named nationally recognized and award-winning stage director Giovanna Sardelli as its director of new works.

In her new role, Sardelli will oversee TheatreWorks’ “ New Works Initiative,” the theater company’s development program for new plays and musicals. She will work with playwrights, composers, directors and others in the theater industry to develop original TheatreWorks productions.

“I am beyond thrilled to become part of the TheatreWorks team,” Sardelli said in a press release.

Sardelli has worked with TheatreWorks in the past — heading up the 2013 production “[ Somewhere,” by Matthew Lopez, as well as the 2011 TheatreWorks premier of “ The North Pool,” by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Rajiv Joseph.

Sardelli holds a master of fine arts in acting from New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts and has taught in NYU’s graduate school of acting as well as the school’s dance department. She is also a graduate of NYU’s rigorous Director’s Lab program.

In addition to her professional work with TheatreWorks, Sardelli has directed and developed plays around the country, including on off-Broadway stages.

She will begin at TheatreWorks this summer, just in time for the new crop of playwrights and composers from all over the country who will come for TheatreWorks’ 13th annual New Works Festival in August. Sardelli is also slated to direct “The Lake Effect,” also by Rajiv Joseph, next season.
