Bike stolen from second story balcony

A local man's bike was stolen from the second-story balcony at his apartment in the 1500 block of W. Middlefield Road, according to police.

The 25-year-old Mountain View man said he had locked his bike up on his balcony in an apartment complex, said Sgt. Sean Thompson with the Mountain View Police Department. The man left his apartment around noon on Aug. 23. On Aug. 24 at about 9 a.m. he noticed it was gone.

Police do not believe anyone broke into the apartment, Thompson said. Instead, they believe someone managed to take the bike by scaling the outside wall of the balcony and cutting the lock, he said.

The bike was a GT brand mountain bike valued at about $500.

Your chances of recovery may be better if you gave a description of it in your posting. That's more important info than mentioning reward amounts. The thieves are getting bolder. I'm keeping mine indoors from now on.

What is the point of this story? Bicycle theft is one of the most common crimes in the Bay Area, maybe second to iphone theft. Because of the price of some bikes (and some iphones), these crimes can qualify as felonies.

So why is this article pointing out a single theft of a medium priced bike? Is there a big upswing of bike theft in the city this summer? This surely isn't the only bike stolen in the city this month. There were probably others stolen this week. Why did this one make the news?

Resident, the point of the article is this: Don't assume that locking your bike on a second-floor balcony will guarantee its security. This is news--at least to me.
