Avocado toast and vegemite: 'Australian-inspired' cafe chain Bluestone Lane arrives in Los Altos

Bluestone Lane was born in New York City but channels Australian coffee culture at all of its cafes, including its newest outpost opening Wednesday, July 31, in downtown Los Altos.

The cafe chain is opening its first sit-down Bay Area location at 288 1st St., the historic train station that last housed Voyageur du Temps.

Bluestone Lane serves coffee, breakfast and lunch all day. For breakfast, think avocado toast with feta cheese, tomatoes and herbs; green baked eggs; overnight oats; vegemite toast; and the "big brekkie" with smoked bacon, poached eggs, roasted tomato, grilled chorizo, avocado, baby kale, baked mushrooms and toast, among other dishes. Lunch features salads, sandwiches, a burger and, of course, veggie bowls. Check out the menu here.

Beyond coffee, there are "wellness" spritzes with adaptogens, cold-pressed vegetable and fruit juices and cocktails.

The light-filled, 1,667-square-foot space has been decorated with Australian beach prints, wooden finishings and rattan rugs. It was designed in collaboration with Australian interior designer Julia Sullivan.

The Los Altos cafe will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Founder and CEO Nick Stone opened the first Bluestone Lane in 2013 after moving to New York from Melbourne. The company has since expanded throughout both the East and West Coast with locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.

Bluestone Lane is reportedly planning to open dozens of new locations over the next few years, armed with $19.5 million in funding.

Looks interesting. Every Australian breakfast I've experienced always included baked beans - a nod to its English roots.

Australian cafe culture has really blossomed over the last 15 years. I so look forward to revisiting old favorites whenever I'm in Sydney.

But don't look for baked beans on the menus down under. And you'd struggle to find 'English roots' in today's Aussie cafes. No criticism of English cafe food intended. I'd just love to see an English chain like Pret expand into the West Coast.

One of the places that do not accept cash for payment. To me that is a no go place. Luckily there are many of those close by to enjoy on my ride.
