Hi! In the following piece, eighth grade student Alexis reflects on the journey of her life so far, and prepares to face whatever is ahead the only way she knows how - with a smile. Cheers, Ms. J

In my 14 years on this earth I've cried, loved, lost, been emotionally drained, and laughed my heart out. I began my life at 5:55pm on September 14, 1999 as a beautiful 5 pound baby girl in the University of Georgia, delivered by the same doctor as my older brother and sister.

My first couple of years were filled with family vacations and trips to the beach with me, my brother, sister, mom and dad. Unfortunately, the happy times ended as I, my sister and brother and mom moved in with my auntie, uncle and three cousins. We spent day in and day out laughing and having family gatherings and just having fun and being happy.

In the winter of 2005 my mom married my step- dad. We began our new lives together in the beautiful, tropical, wonderful state of Hawaii. Being a military family we got used to moving states and starting over, which ended up being a good thing. In 2008 my brother was diagnosed with lupus, and in 2010 we moved to California to get him better treatment.

My 6th grade year was probably the worst year, because I had horrible rumors being spread about me and I thought middle school would never get better. I had lost my two best friends when we moved, and had random people that knew nothing about me talking behind my back. Fortunately, in 7th grade I met a whole new kind of friend who accepted me for who I am and didn't care about my past. Friends surrounded me trying to cheer me up whenever I was down about anything. Seven years of happy family time, but also some very hard times, consumed my life.

Unfortunately, in 2013 my mom became a single mom again and we moved off the military base. Now that I'm in 8th grade I've been through a lot, but whenever times get hard I hold my head up high, put a smile on my face and face it head first. My story is still not finished, I still have lessons to be learned, people to love and pain to be felt. I'm Alexis R., and this perspective is to be continued.
