If you have old computers, disk drives and other electronic items that you want to dispose of in an environmentally friendly way then take them to the Shoreline Amphitheatre, One Amphitheatre Parkway - Main Parking Lot, Mountain View on Saturday, March 28, 2009 between 9 am to 4 pm. Waste Management and Sony will be there to help you spring clean.

Sony says "Bring any brand unwanted electronics products to this

Take Back Recycling Program event, and Sony and Waste Management will recycle them for free.

The first 2,000 visitors at the event will receive a reusable tote bag and a voucher for a Sony product (The product must cost at least $100 and be picked up at one of two local Sony StyleŽ stores - Valley Fair or Stanford Shopping Center locations only. The voucher is non-transferable and only valid for a product that has been pre-selected by Sony. The offer is available only while supplies last and no rain checks or substitute products will be given.)

are there any electronics they WON'T take? Also, what about batteries?

Other question: I heard that recylcling electronics is done by villagers in china or something. is this true?

Just curious - thanks for any help.

just curious, I dont know how stuff from this event will get sourced, but I do know that there are a lot of local for-profit electronics recyclers locally

I have contacted Waste Management to try to get some answers to your questions. Here is a [Web Link Fact Sheet] that has more information.

If you have other things you want to give away you might consider [Web Link Mountain View Freecycle].

Karen Stern from Waste Management kindly sent me the following information:

Accepting: Televisions, computer monitors, computer systems, VCRs, DVDs, cameras, phones, stereo equipment, videogame consoles, keyboards, cables, scanners, printers, fax machines, ink-jet and printer cartridges, phones, computer mice, and rechargeable batteries.

Not Accepting: Items that cannot be accepted include microwaves, humidifiers, thermometers, air conditioners, smoke/fire alarms/detectors and large household appliances, such as dishwashers, refrigerators and washer/dryers.

What will happen to my products:

Waste Management will collect, store, track inventory and dismantle the products in the form of common raw materials where they can be bought and sold on the global market.

The waste is processed in the US and reused where possible.

They will accept RECHARGEABLE batteries.
