Los Altos High School wants any and all portable CD players, boom boxes, laptops, MP3 players, fax machines and any other useless electronic junk you might have lying around the house or tucked away in the garage.

The high school's Associated Student Body will be collecting electronic waste from all around the Peninsula. All are encouraged to dump their old electronics at the Los Altos High School campus, at 201 Almond Ave. in Los Altos, on March 5, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The used electronics will be taken away by Green Mouse Recycling, a state-approved e-waste recycling service.

Electronics, like TVs, computer monitors and cell phones are made with heavy metals and other chemicals, like fire retardant, that can harm the environment, wildlife and humans if improperly disposed.

To find out how to have larger items -- like refrigerators and other household appliances -- collected by the school, contact Evelyn O’Donnell at evelynodonell@aol.com, Mention Los Altos High School and pick up at your home will be arranged.
