Original post made on Jun 6, 2014

Google's hometown of Mountain View has quickly become a flash point for the debate over Silicon Valley's resistance to allowing new housing for its exploding workforce, and on Sunday, the San Francisco Chronicle entered the fray.

Yes, there is a huge imbalance in jobs and housing. And MV cannot build enough housing to make a difference. The key then is to completely stop development of new office space, and put in policies that encourage Google, LinkedIn, and all the other big employers to grow their base ELSEWHERE.

Spread out and use that wonderful high speed Internet for virtual collaboration. That will give companies access to more diverse talents while letting those people commute shorter distances and enjoy a wider variety of communities.

Google and LinkedIn add very little value to MV. It was a great place to live 20 years ago, a good place 10 years ago, and now it's right on the edge of being a gentrified traffic jam.

The last comment is spot on. This mad rush to accommodate development is crazy. It's pretty clear that the 30 year plan is going to be surpassed in 5-7 years. What then? There are problems both with the development and with its rapid pace. SLOW DOWN. Take time to think! The impact of each new batch of offices should be felt before embarking on the next wave. If that forces some development to go elsewhere, then fine! The most evil thing Google does is to mass all of its staff in one small city. It's really ridiculous.
