Fremont, CA

Submitted by Kathryn Day

Harry Walter Day, 97, was a resident of Palo Alto from 1960 to 1973 and a resident in the Bay Area for the rest of his long life. He was born in the small hamlet of Logan, West Virginia, and early showed an exceptional aptitude for mechanical and electrical design. As a young man, he put this talent into national service as a Tuskegee Airman. He served as a radar operator protecting the fighter planes in Italy. After the war, he studied electrical engineering at the University of Madison, Wisconsin. He was employed as an electrical engineer by Lockheed and Philco Ford in Palo Alto. Harry lived on Talisman Drive and could often be seen playing football, baseball or skateboarding when he was not volunteering to help neighbors with his wide range of practical skills or tinkering with one of his string of sports cars. He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Fremont; his former wife, Barbara, of Cupertino; his daughter, Kathryn, of Berkeley; and his son, Jeffrey.
