Heavy traffic expected at local Marine's funeral

Bookmark and Share
Local authorities are anticipating that more than 1,000 people will attend the private funeral of Capt. Matthew Manoukian, to be held at St. Francis High School in Mountain View on Saturday, Aug. 18. Police are requesting those not attending to avoid the area, as heavy traffic is expected.

Manoukian, the son of two high-ranking Santa Clara County judicial officials, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 10. His funeral, which is not open to the public, begins at 3 p.m. at the local private high school.

Police spokeswoman Jaime Garrett issued a press release today advising those not planning on attending the funeral to steer clear of the campus, located at 1885 Miramonte Ave. -- that is if they are worried about being punctual. Traffic is expected to increase greatly as a result of the service.

The police announcement also advised locals to be aware that there will be a 21-gun salute and a military fly-over during the funeral. More information on Manoukian can be found at www.captainmattmanoukian.com.

An American Hero. I didn't know Matt but my heart goes out to his family. The way he was murdered is awful, Matts death is why we need out. Afghanistan will always have corruption at every level. Read this: According to multiple news outlets, Capt. Manoukian was a member of a Special Operations force deployed to Afghanistan in May, to train local governments in security against Taliban insurgents. He attended a predawn meal followed by a meeting to discuss security with local police. One of the alleged police officers, actually an insurgent, fatally shot the three Marines before fleeing.
