Four bikes stolen from shared garage

Four bicycles were stolen Aug. 5 from a garage in the 300 block of Central Avenue, police said.
The 44-year-old owner of the bikes returned from an out-of-town trip shortly before midnight to find the door to the detached garage where she stores her bikes was open, according to Mountain View police spokeswoman Liz Wylie. Missing from the open garage were two light blue Ellsworths, a black Canfield Bros. and a white Felt.
There was no sign of forced entry into the garage, which is shared by other residents of the adjacent townhouse complex, Wylie said. Police are not sure if someone with access to the garage stole the bikes, if someone neglected to close the garage or if someone figured out another way to get the door open.Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? Posted by lock them up, a resident of the Old Mountain View neighborhood, on Aug 7, 2012 at 12:26 am Unfortunately, your property is not safe in a locked garage in Mountain View anymore. Always lock up your bicycles, even when stored in a locked garage. Thieves will often case a neighborhood looking for who stores expensive products (especially bicycles) in their garages, then they will come back at night to break in.

Posted by My Bike Was Just Stolen, a resident of the Jackson Park neighborhood, on Aug 8, 2012 at 9:20 am Sadly, my locked bike was stolen from an outdoor bike rack at a condo complex very close to this location less than 48 hours ago.
It was a cheap bike, but it doesn't seem like the thieves really care. They'll grab anything that isn't bolted down, and even if it is chained down, they have bolt cutters to cut through that.
I filed a police report, however I have no hope that my property will be recovered.
Mountain View is not as safe as it was a few years ago.

Posted by gonna get you sucka, a resident of the The Crossings neighborhood, on Aug 9, 2012 at 11:55 am Mountain View is not as safe as it use to be because this city is wealthy. Money is everywhere and opportunity is around every corner. That being said, M.V. still has its ghetto areas and that is where this type of crime originates.

If you think Mountain View USE to be safe from such crimes, think again. I'm over 50 and have lived here all my life, and just happen to live on the other end of the same street this theft occurred on.
I had 2 nice road bikes stolen back in the 1970s, one locked-up in the bike racks in the middle of old M.V. High School, yet taken in broad daylight while I was in class! Judging by the number of stolen bikes I witnessed in the police impound yard while searching for my missing ride back then, I can say with confidence that bike thefts were not uncommon. Plenty of news reports of similar robberies in town over the years since then spoke likewise.
Sorry to say that little has changed in that venue.
And please note that poverty had nothing to do with these bike thefts. Anyone saying that poor neighborhoods produce all the crooked people should know their politicians better. Plenty of bike crimes are committed by kids (or adults) from well-to-do backgrounds...check the stats.
As I already stated, wealth, or the lack of in this case, has nothing to do with this problem.
