Hacker Dojo to hold "underwear run" fundraiser on St. Patrick's Day

 | In what has got to be a first for Mountain View, an "underwear run" has been planned for Saint Patrick's Day to raise money for Hacker Dojo, the community center for computer programmers that is having trouble with building codes.
On Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Dojo has planned an outer-garment optional "Fire Escape Race" to start at the Dojo, along with a bake sale and "an afternoon of drinking and merrymaking," according to a press release. Participants are being asked to wear green or a "hilarious costume" if they are unwilling to dress down for the occasion. A tricycle-mounted sound system is expected to accompany the runners, playing such songs as LFMAO's "I'm sexy and I know it."
The Dojo is trying to raise $250,000 for building improvements, including fire sprinklers and fire exits after the city threatened to close the center down in February for not meeting city and state fire codes. The city backed off when the Dojo began installing a fire alarm, the bare minimum to continue operating as a shared office space and "social living room," but the Dojo has had to cancel its regular job fairs and classes that bring in more than 49 people.
The Dojo has become an incubator for tech start-ups, including media-sharing website Pinterest, whose CEO Ben Silberman reportedly spent long hours at the Dojo refining the site before it was launched a year ago.
More than 40 runners have already signed up, and if it goes above 45 the event may be moved to another location, according to the Dojo's website. The Dojo is hoping for donations between $45 and $70 from runners and spectators.
The mile-long run is not billed as a competitive race. "We're extremely serious about having a good time," the Dojo's website says.

It was interesting to hear that Pinterest got started at HackerDojo. It clearly shows that this institution is bringing real economic value to Mountain View. The next big job-creator is being built somewhere right now -- let's maximize the chances it's in our city of Mountain View!
