REMODELING? ... If you are a homeowner, contractor or designer and are remodeling a home that you think might be newsworthy, please send us an email with a brief description of the project (perhaps a small house with storage challenges or a house with a funky floor plan) and information on how to contact you. We might use it in a future story or special design section. Please send emails to Elizabeth Lorenz, Home and Real Estate editor, at email@example.com.
TEST YOUR DETECTORS ... "Fire Prevention Week" is Oct. 9-15, so this month is a good time to test your smoke detectors and change their batteries. Most smoke alarms, according to First Alert, expire after 10 years so make sure yours are in working order even if they have fresh batteries.
FILOLI HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES ... The holidays don't begin until late November, but Filoli will sell tickets to its Holiday Tradition to members on Oct. 3 (online) and Oct. 10 (by telephone) and non-members on Oct. 17. This year, Filoli will recreate the feeling of coming to a turn-of-the-century holiday party. Like decades ago, as you enter the house, you'll be greeted by the butler. The two families celebrated the holidays mainly in the reception, dining and ballrooms, and in these rooms you'll find vintage elegance in both holiday decorations and unique gift items. A 17-foot Christmas tree will be set up in the reception room and trees will also line the ballroom. Seeking Christmas decorations? Christmas Traditions in the Drawing Room is the place to look. The heart of the house -- the kitchen's Estate Bounty and the Pantry's Butler's Domain -- will be overflowing with delectable foods and accessories. If you're looking for holiday plants, bulbs and fresh greenery, that's all available for purchase, too. This nine-day event kicks off on Opening Night Nov. 25. On the following days, you can shop the day or evening holiday boutiques, enjoy a buffet lunch, savor a bistro dinner in the Café or attend the delightful Children's Lunch on Saturday, Dec. 3. For more information about tickets, go to filoli.org or call 650-364-8300 ext. 508.
